A Celebration of Words, Wonder and Creativity

Literary Week at Wetherby Prep has once again filled the school with a vibrant buzz of reading, writing and imagination. From our youngest pupils to our senior boys, the week was marked by curiosity, creativity and a willingness to explore literature in new and exciting ways.

A Feast of Stories: Reading Taster Menus

One of the highlights of the week was the introduction of our Reading Taster Menus. These sessions invited boys to sample a variety of genres and authors, encouraging them to broaden their reading horizons. The impact was immediate and impressive and pupils eagerly ventured beyond their usual choices and discovered unexpected favourites.  A standout moment came from Ali in Year 7, who has barely put 'Noughts and Crosses' down since trying it for the first time!

Inspiring Encounters with Guest Authors

We were delighted to welcome a trio of visiting authors, each bringing their own creative magic to Wetherby:

  • Alim Kamara captivated Years 7 and 8 with his dynamic storytelling and infectious energy.
  • Tor Freeman introduced Years 5 and 6 to the art of comics, showing how humour and illustration can spark imagination.
  • Paul Lyalls worked with Years 3 and 4, guiding them through playful, powerful poetry.

Their workshops were lively, interactive and deeply inspiring, giving pupils a rare opportunity to see the creative process up close and understand what it truly means to be a writer.

Blackout Poetry: Creativity Between the Lines

Blackout Poetry sessions offered a completely different lens through which to view literature. Pupils transformed existing texts into striking new poems by selecting key words and artfully concealing the rest. Many boys continued developing their pieces during art lessons, creating strong cross-curricular connections that blended visual design with expressive language.   The resulting poems were thoughtful, inventive and, in many cases, surprisingly profound.

Celebrating Our Young Authors: WetherWrites Competition

The annual WetherWrites competition once again showcased exceptional talent across the school. This year’s entries were imaginative, reflective and impressively ambitious. What shone through most clearly was the individuality of each writer’s voice, the confidence, creativity and authenticity with which the boys expressed their ideas.

The message was unmistakable:
Wetherby Prep boys are writers!
