fitness and health

At Wetherby Prep we have identified certain health and fitness objectives looking at the basic principles of nutrition, what constitutes optimum nutrition and how this may be applied in order to achieve the best results, both academically and physically. Positive Learning and improved performance is therefore a central feature of all tasks undertaken. Through precise measurable means, all pupils are fitness tested at regular intervals; achievable targets agreed upon, and realistic goals established, designed to motivate and encourage the child. This information is available within the Physical Education Department which is then used to recognise pupil progress, identify pupils that need further encouragement, and establish new individual targets for all pupils.

The relatively small class size numbers allows us to be exceptionally vigilant, stretching all pupils according to their particular needs.

Optimum nutrition is central to this. Improved levels of performance; both academically and physically, can only be achieved through a greater awareness of what constitutes health and vitality. Our objectives are to equip all pupils with a level of knowledge concerning key nutritional issues such as:

  • food allergies
  • how food can affect mood
  • enhancing IQ
  • what fats are healthy, what fats are not
  • balancing proteins, carbohydrates and fats
  • eradicating asthma and eczema
  • the organic debate
  • sports nutrition
  • weight management
  • healthy meal, snack and juice suggestions
  • what are vitamins and minerals

Much of our work is research based. All pupils will manage a portfolio and work towards project deadlines. Often, pupils will work in small groups, the aim being to encourage discussion, share information and present findings through a variety of medium. The expectation is that all pupils will utilize this information and in doing so truly reap the benefits of all their hard work, that being, improved levels of health and vitality.
